What is it about Penang that sets its food apart from the rest of Malaysia? Could it be something in the water? The fresh island air? Maybe just the Pride of the Penangite? Whatever it is, it attracts visitors not just from the rest of the country but also the world over.
During my first year of going vegetarian in 2012, I happened to find myself in Penang for work, and found eating out to be an absolute breeze. Thanks to the strong Buddhist presence in the community, vegetarian food is very accessible.
Going back there as a vegan a few years later, was it just as easy? I feel Yes, but that’s also because some new places have popped up since I was last there. Next to Kuala Lumpur – or dare I say even more so – George Town is a Malaysian location to be at when it comes to making plant-based discoveries.
One of the ‘IT’ places for vegan food right now in the vibrant little town is Pǐnxīn Vegan Cuisine. Stylish setting, fair prices and some of the tastiest Malaysian food I’ve ever had the honour of sampling, Pǐnxīn Vegan Cuisine ticks all my boxes in memorable dining experiences.
The next time you plan a trip to the Pearl of the Orient, make sure this cafe stays high on your to-do list!
