Embracing the plant-based lifestyle in Malaysia

12 Vegan Food Delivery Services You Should Know About (Klang Valley + 1 Nationwide!)

12 Vegan Food Delivery Services You Should Know About (Klang Valley + 1 Nationwide!)

In the era of COVID-19, more Malaysians than ever are choosing to have food delivered to their home. An increasingly common question I get asked is what kind of options there are which are purely plant-based, i.e. without containing meat, egg or dairy, and other animal by-products. When compiling this list, even I was surprised at how many options there currently are in the Klang Valley. Whether the source is from a concern for health, animal welfare, or simply a desire for something different, it is clear that a demand for plant-based food is here to stay… and food providers are listening.

It’s unfortunate that the popularity of food delivery inevitably happens at a cost to the environment, with enough single-use plastic being used daily by the food delivery industry to make anyone’s eyes water. However, until fully compostable alternatives are offered that are practical AND financially sustainable for the vendor, it is highly recommended for the customer to wash all recyclable takeaway materials and take them to your neighborhood recycling bin or facility whenever possible, and also putting in a special request before checkout to not include disposable plastic cutlery in your order because, let’s face it, who already has too many unused sets at home along with all their other washable plastic / metal ones? (There is one enterprise I’ve mentioned below that is not food per se, but their zero waste business model totally deserves a place on this list!)
Aside from the services mentioned in no particular order, there are plenty of brick-and-mortar F&B establishments that offer plant-based food delivery too, some popular ones including Sala, The Hungry Tapir, Sushi Kitchen Kota Damansara and Rawsome. There are so many options for you to pick from these days! A shoutout to my community who keep these little players afloat. May we all continue to support local, and consume responsibly.

10 + 11. RENDANG FROM PAH PIN’S POT AND MUSHROOM LAH

Okay, I honestly didn’t know which one to feature, as the ready-to-eat rendang from both of these Halal vendors are fantastic. That traditional dry curry that Malaysians love is given a plant-based treatment by these two small family businesses. Pah Pin’s Pot sells two types of rendang (Oyster Mushroom and Cassava Leaves), while Mushroom Lah exclusively uses shiitake mushroom stalks. It’s impossible for me to recommend one over the other; the marriage of herbs and spices in either recipe are uniquely outstanding, and equally set to leave a lasting impression. I say try both! Be forewarned though: you may end up becoming a repeat customer of both too.

12. OOI MEATLESS GROCER (OMG)

Although not serving meals per se, the frozen goods delivered by hunble go-getter Nicole Ooi and her team are highly recommended as rainy-day staples if you don’t have the time to cook entirely from scratch.  Although their inventory is vegetarian, one of the vegan brands they stock in particular that I personally recommend is TheRawPowerHouse, with whom OMG is a main delivery and sales partner. Amongst TheRawPowerHouse’s premium product range is dumplings, hericium mushroom rendang and luncheon meat, all lovingly homemade, free from preservatives, and super duper scrummilicious with noodles or rice.
