Being a teetotaler for almost all my life, the one thing that has saved me on many a date night was a tall glass of Virgin Colada.
One of my favourite mocktails of all time. Wait, let me re-phrase that. My ONLY favourite mocktail of all time.
It was only befitting to pay tribute to the drink that has offered the most loyal company during my nightlife days!
One of my fruity go-tos in smoothies is passionfruit. I can’t stop gushing about how lucky one is to live in a country where tropical fruit is so bountiful. I find it quite amusing that the first time I was given a fresh passionfruit to eat in my corporate days, the colleague who gave it to me said she had no idea what it was herself. I resorted to posting a picture of ths wrinkled-up fruit on Twitter to ask if anyone recognized it!
Now being well acquainted with the local passionfruit, I always make sure I have a standby supply, freshly removed from the shells and stored in the freezer… Which comes in great handy for this recipe!
Adding a touch of indulgence to this recipe is macadamias. The dimension of nutty creaminess it imparts cannot be described. However, if you have a nut allergy, or simply want to make this drink on a budget, the smoothie stands very well without them.
I also consistently prefer using fresh coconut milk over carton. If the fresh version is more readily available, then why not, kan? Should you use carton milk, then I suggest adding a bit more milk or water to the recipe to thin it out.

Da Vina Colada
A twist on a mocktail favourite, with an elegant touch of macadamia nuts.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 tbsp passionfruit
- 1 cup of diced pineapple
- 2 medium-sized bananas
- 2 tbsp macadamias
- Juice of 1/2 orange
- 1 cup fresh coconut milk
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1 cup ice
Directions
- Step 1 Blend together until fine and serve!
